I recently had the pleasure to read “The Great Gatsby” by one of my favourite authors F.Scott. Fitzgerald.
This book has been by far one of the most gratifying experiences i have ever stumbled upon. It is a critic to the world of pleasure, to the golden girls, to manipulative men and overall a critic to society. The author reflects in his book many aspects of his personal life, his intermitent relationship with his wife Zelda, which he refered to as “my golden girl”. It is amazing how Fitzgerald can make you feel a part of Mr. Gatsby’s world, it can make you touch Daisy with your hands just by reading the impeccable essence of his words, and at the same time make you despise her.
The thing i personally enjoyed the most about this book, was that even though it was written in the 20’s (age of artists and writers) it is still applicable to our times, in wich we can still find how the things we so often glorify tend to crumble and crash behind gold and cash masks. He razzled-dazzled me with this perfect book, and i absolutely reccomend it.
I did not want to give too much information about it, so that you can find out by yourself about this materpiece only by reading it.

If you like music and you’re attracted by the British world and culture, then “Touching from a distance” is definitely the book for you.
Ian Curtis, one of the the most interesting and intricate personalities of 1970s, is the main character of the book, which is basically his biography. Starting from the complicated and dark years of Ian’s adolescence, spent in the mancunians suburbs among poetry and drugs, the story goes all trough his life, till the 18th of May of 1980, date of his death.
Outcasted by his family and unemployed, in 1976 Ian decided to set up a band with three other friends, forming the Joy Division. The innovative and penetrating sound of the band immediately caught the attention of many producers and media of the city, so that Joy Division quickly became one of the most famous bands in th UK. Their first album, called “Unknown Pleasures” (released in 1979), is still one of the most influent albums of british music history.
However, is precisely in 1979 that Ian’s problems began. In fact, during their first international tour the lead singer of Joy Division started to show some epilepsy symptoms. The desease completely destroyed Ian physically and psychologically, bringing him into a deep depression and, later on, to commit suicide.
I personally found the book really interesting because it includes loads of different themes, all concentrated in one man’s life (music, philosophy, poetry, love intrigues,..) and it also made me think about the real meaning of life. Therefore, I strongly recommend you to read this book and to take a ride in trough the amazing world of Ian Curtis and Joy Division.

“Il mio filo sottile” (Edizioni Del Noce, 2013) di Fanny Grespan

Si tratta di un romanzo di 175 pagine, diviso in 17 capitoli e che viene scritto, secondo quanto affermato dalla narratrice nell’ ultima pagina, nel Dicembre del 2011 a Treviso. Ciascun capitolo è introdotto da una citazione d’ autore, che ci spinge da subito alla riflessione.
Nella copertina, su fondo rosso, troviamo l’ immagine di due piedini scalzi di bimba, che camminano su un filo sottile. E’ questo il tema centrale del romanzo: il filo sottile, che tutti noi seguiamo nelle nostre vite. Un filo facile da smarrire, ma che, a volte, le circostanze stesse, che dobbiamo affrontare, ci inducono a ritrovare.
Il romanzo racconta la storia di una giovane insegnante di lettere, con le sue vicissitudini, le sue insicurezze, i suoi amori, che si trova a dover affrontare l’ esperienza tragica del coma.
Lo sfondo è quello del nord-est italiano, capeggiano le città di Venezia, sede del prestigioso Ateneo e di Treviso, con la sua Piazza dei Signori e i ristorantini tipici, che si affacciano da sotto i portici. Non mancano borgate suggestive come quella di Asolo, elegante e persa in una dimensione temporale non precisata, come quella dell’ amore.
E’ un romanzo che si incentra sull’ analisi dei personaggi e che presenta delle delicate e, talvolta ironiche, descrizioni della quotidianità. I protagonisti sono “persone normali”, non eroiche per la cronaca, ma eroiche sì nell’ assaporare le gioie e nell’ affrontare le difficoltà della vita. Il messaggio finale è positivo: sarà proprio la malattia vera che aiuterà la protagonista a sconfiggere le malattie immaginarie e a capire la propria reale forza, rinascendo, dopo il trauma, come donna indipendente e… ritrovando quel filo sottile…
Fanny Grespan è mia cugina. E’ nata a Treviso nel 1974 e vive a Castelfranco Veneto. Si è laureata in Lettere all’ Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia e dal 1999 è insegnante di Scuola Primaria. Questo è il suo primo romanzo; a me è piaciuto leggerlo, a prescindere dai legami affettivi che ho con Fanny e che mi spingevano a cercare di capire se potevo ritrovare o ritrovarmi in alcuni personaggi (sarà stato il mio alter-ego narrativo quello della cugina da spaventare guidando in modo spericolato sugli autoscontri?), perchè è un libro che induce alla riflessione e alla presa di consapevolezza delle proprie scelte, all’ approdo ad una dimensione realistica della vita, che però non prescinde dall’ osservare la magia che ci circonda.
